TRAINING OPTIONS

All training activities are tailored to the requirements of the commissioning organisation. Rather than use 'off-the-shelf' workshop formats, we prefer to discuss the desired outcomes of the training before the format - the content and length of training - is agreed. We adhere to the principle of 'form follows function'. However, to assist potential clients in considering their needs, some examples of the most popular programmes - designed for three levels of practice competency - are outlined below.

Please contact us, without any obligation, to discuss your precise requirements.

QUICK OVERVIEW

This half-day or one-day workshop is designed to provide an opportunity for participants to get a sense of the spirit of motivational interviewing and what its potential applications might be in a particular setting. Using live and recorded demonstrations, plus a few well-chosen exercises, the aim is to enable participants to decide whether they might want to pursue a course of training.

LEVEL 1: START LEARNING

This is a two-day or preferably three-day workshop designed as an introduction to motivational interviewing. It is for people with no previous exposure to or training in MI. The workshop programme assumes no knowledge of counselling, and uses sequences of brief exercises to explore and shape practice behaviour. It also may be regarded as a ‘crash-course’ in person-centred approaches.

Workshop Aim: to equip participants with a basic knowledge of the spirit, principles and practice skills of motivational interviewing.

LEVEL 2: DEVELOP COMPETENCE

This is a one-day or preferably two-day workshop designed for people who have either completed the START LEARNING workshop or have other previous basic training. The workshop programme assumes some familiarity with MI and that participants have attempted to use MI in their practice. It does not assume that participants have achieved any particular threshold of competency. The programme is based primarily upon case material brought by the participants.

Workshop Aim: to assist participants in further developing their understanding of change promotion techniques and in enhancing their motivational interviewing skills.

LEVEL 3: REFINE PRACTICE

This is a one-day or preferably two-day workshop designed for people who have either completed the DEVELOP COMPETENCE workshop or who have already achieved, through other means, a level of moderate competency in their practice. The programme is based upon audio/video recordings and transcriptions of the participants working with their own clients/patients.

Workshop Aim: to assist participants in refining their practice to a level of sustained competency, through the techniques of content analysis and self-monitoring.

TUITION FOR INDIVIDUALS AND SMALL GROUPS

Any of the above workshop formats may be provided, in a suitably modified form, for individuals or small groups of up to five participants.

DISTANCE LEARNING

Telephone guidance, using analysis of recordings and transcripts of the learner’s work, is becoming ever more popular. Monthly sessions last approximately an hour and provide an opportunity for the practitioner to reflect on the course of a particular session. This service is offered for practitioners with previous experience and training.

HEALTH BEHAVIOUR CHANGE NEGOTIATION

This workshop, based on the techniques and strategies developed by Rollnick, Mason & Butler, is designed as an introduction to behaviour change negotiation. It is for primary and secondary healthcare practitioners with experience of discussing behaviour change issues with their patients. The techniques are particularly helpful with smoking cessation, alcohol problems, diabetes and diet, medication concordance, and physical inactivity. The workshop programme uses sequences of brief exercises to explore and shape practice behaviour. In recognition of the limited time practitioners often have for training, it may be adapted for sessions as short as two hours.

Workshop Aim: to equip participants with a basic knowledge of the principles and practice skills of behaviour change negotiation techniques. These techniques may be explored at any of the three levels mentioned above.

TRAINING FOR TRAINERS

Workshops for new trainers are designed in conjunction with Prof. Stephen Rollnick and /or colleagues in the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT). Programmes are tailored to the specific requirements of the client.

Workshops are only organised for practitioners who have already achieved a high level of demonstrable competency in motivational interviewing. TfT workshops led by JAT do not entitle participants to membership of the MINT.

The MINT offers international Training New Trainers workshops at least annually. Completion of these workshops entitles participants to membership of the MINT. For full details of the next TNT workshop, please visit the MINT website.
